Baseline requirements (always confirm current rules)
The SBA publishes the official rules in its Standard Operating Procedures. In general, lenders look for:
- A for-profit business operating in the U.S. that meets SBA size standards.
- Owners who have invested their own time or money and can show ability to repay.
- A sound business purpose — acquisition, working capital, equipment, real estate, refinancing.
- Personal guarantees from owners of 20% or more.
- Reasonable credit history and no recent federal loan defaults.
What we can and can't tell you
This page is education. Only an SBA-approved lender can determine eligibility. We'll update this guide when the SBA changes its rules and show the date of the last review.

Talk with a financing specialistCommon questions
How do I apply for an SBA 7(a) loan?
Apply through an SBA-participating lender with your use of funds, financials, ownership details and supporting projections. The lender confirms eligibility and credit requirements.
How long does an SBA loan take?
Timelines vary widely by lender and deal complexity, from a few weeks to a few months.
Is an SBA loan cheaper?
Not always. Longer terms can lower monthly payments, but guarantee fees and documentation add cost. Compare total cost, not just the rate.
