SBA Express loans

SBA Express loans: limits, speed and when to use one

SBA Express is a faster version of the SBA 7(a) loan for smaller amounts, where approved lenders make the credit decision themselves and the SBA responds quickly. The trade-off is a smaller loan limit and a lower SBA guarantee, so lenders may apply tighter standards.

Profit Theory, LLC is not a lender. Lenders and the SBA make all decisions; approval, rates and savings are never guaranteed. Educational only.

Key takeaways

The Express formulas

Loan amount ≤ SBA Express maximum

SBA guaranteed amount = loan amount × guarantee %

Monthly payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n)

P is the loan amount, r is the annual rate ÷ 12 and n is the number of monthly payments.

Worked example (illustrative numbers)

A service business wants working capital and a vehicle. All numbers below are illustrative, not quotes.

  • Illustrative loan amount: $250,000
  • Illustrative guarantee: 50% → $125,000 guaranteed by the SBA
  • Illustrative rate: 10.00% annual (0.833% monthly)
  • Illustrative term: 10 years (120 months)
  • Illustrative monthly payment: about $3,304
  • Illustrative total interest over the term: about $146,460

Illustrative only. Real terms depend on the lender, the SBA and your file.

When an Express loan makes sense

Express can fit when the amount is modest and timing matters:

  • Working capital or a revolving line for an established business
  • Equipment, vehicles or small renovations
  • Refinancing higher-cost business debt
  • Owners with clean financials who can deliver documents quickly

When a standard 7(a) or 504 may fit better

Larger projects, business acquisitions and owner-occupied real estate often fit a standard 7(a) or a 504 loan better because of higher limits, a larger guarantee or long fixed-rate terms.

Why 'express' is not instant

The SBA's quick turnaround applies to its own response. Lender underwriting, appraisals and closing still take time, so total timelines vary widely.

Rates and fees (checked against sba.gov on November 1, 2026)

  • Maximum loan amount: the SBA lists $500,000.
  • SBA guarantee: the SBA lists up to 50%.
  • Revolving lines of credit: the SBA lists terms of up to 10 years.
  • Interest rate caps and guarantee fees: these follow 7(a) rules and change over time, so we do not state them here — see the SBA source.

Rates, caps and fees change. Check the official source before you rely on any figure: SBA.gov: Types of 7(a) loans (including SBA Express).

Common questions

What is the SBA Express loan limit?

The SBA lists a $500,000 maximum as of November 1, 2026. Check sba.gov for any changes.

How fast is an SBA Express loan?

SBA Express lenders have delegated authority to process and close loans without SBA review, which can shorten the process. Total time to funding still depends on the lender, your documents and closing steps.

What does the SBA guarantee on an Express loan?

Up to 50%, per the SBA. That is lower than a standard 7(a), which is one reason lenders may be more selective.

Can an SBA Express loan be a line of credit?

Yes. Express loans can be structured as revolving lines of credit, subject to SBA term limits and the lender's policies.

What are SBA Express interest rates?

Lenders set the rate within SBA maximums, which change with base rates. See sba.gov for current caps rather than relying on a published number.

Does Profit Theory approve SBA Express loans?

No. Profit Theory, LLC is not a lender. A financing specialist can help you compare options and prepare; lenders make all decisions.
