Effective rate is a diagnostic, not a savings quote. Card mix, card-present vs. keyed, and network rules change what any provider can offer.

Questions to ask your processor

  • • Is my pricing interchange-plus, tiered or flat-rate?
  • • What is your markup above interchange, in % and per item?
  • • Which monthly, PCI, statement or gateway fees apply?
  • • Is there an early-termination fee or equipment lease?

How to calculate credit card processing fees

Effective rate = total fees ÷ total card volume × 100. If you processed $60,000 and paid $1,950 in total fees, your effective rate is 3.25%.

Why effective rate beats advertised rate

A "2.6% + 10¢" quote can end up well above that once monthly fees, PCI fees, non-qualified surcharges and gateway charges are added. Effective rate captures everything you actually paid.

Limits

Your rate is driven by card mix (rewards, business and international cards cost more), how cards are accepted (in-person vs. keyed or online) and average ticket. This tool is diagnostic and doesn't promise any savings.
