Plumbing financing and payments

Plumbing businesses most often finance service vehicles and equipment, bridge seasonal cash gaps with a line of credit, and buy competing shops to add technicians and service agreements. Lenders focus on repeatable revenue, technician capacity and how fast you collect after a job.

Typical financing needs for plumbing

Service vehicles and equipment

Vans, upfits, hydro-jetters and camera equipment, usually financed with the equipment as collateral over three to seven years.

Working capital for seasonal swings

A revolving line can cover payroll and materials when new-construction work slows or emergency calls spike.

Acquiring another shop

Buying a retiring owner's shop can add licensed technicians, customer lists and maintenance agreements.

Shop or yard real estate

Owner-occupied property may fit longer-term real estate structures such as SBA 504.

Worked example: $180,000 service van and equipment package

Payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), r = rate ÷ 12, n = years × 12

  • • Equipment model at 9% illustrative rate, 5-year term
  • • Monthly payment ≈ $3,737
  • • Annual debt service ≈ $44,838
  • • Cash flow needed at 1.25x DSCR ≈ $56,048

Payments: what drives processing cost in plumbing

  • • Card-not-present fees when customers pay by phone after the job
  • • Large-ticket repipe or water-heater jobs that raise fees in dollars
  • • Slow invoice collection on commercial work

Effective rate = total monthly processing fees ÷ monthly card volume × 100

  • • Illustrative: $1,800 in fees ÷ $60,000 in card volume × 100 = 3.00%
  • • Illustrative only. Your statement, card mix and pricing model determine your actual rate.

Plumbing financing FAQ

How long are plumbing equipment loans?

Terms commonly run three to seven years and should not outlast the useful life of the van or equipment. The lender decides the final term.

Can a plumbing company finance the purchase of another shop?

Often, yes, using a term loan or SBA 7(a) sized to the combined cash flow. Lenders look at the target's revenue history, technician retention and customer concentration.

Is a line of credit better than a term loan for slow months?

Short-term cash gaps usually fit a revolving line better than a long-term loan, because you draw only what you need and repay as jobs are paid.

Does Profit Theory lend to plumbing businesses?

No. Profit Theory is not a lender. A financing specialist helps you plan and package the request, then, with your consent, introduces you to providers we select based on fit. Lenders make every credit, rate and term decision.

What should I prepare before I apply?

Usually two to three years of business tax returns, year-to-date financial statements, a debt schedule, and a short explanation of what the money is for and how it will be repaid. The loan package checklist lists items by loan type.
