SBA loan requirements for business owners

An SBA loan is made by a lender and partially guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Borrowers generally must be for-profit U.S. small businesses, show ability to repay, contribute equity, and meet SBA and lender rules. SBA rules change — confirm current requirements on SBA.gov and with the lender.

Profit Theory is not a lender. Providers make all funding decisions; approval is never guaranteed.

General eligibility

Common requirements include:

  • Operate for profit in the U.S. and meet SBA size standards
  • Be in an eligible industry
  • Show reasonable ability to repay from cash flow
  • Owner equity and personal guarantees from significant owners
  • Use proceeds for an eligible purpose

The process

You apply through an SBA-participating lender, not the SBA directly. The lender underwrites the loan, requests the guarantee, and sets terms within SBA limits. A complete package — financials, projections, use of funds and owner information — makes the process smoother.
