Small business loans in Houston

Houston businesses may need financing for equipment, contract delivery or a longer collection cycle. Start with the specific project and the cash available to repay it.

Equipment, customer concentration and Houston trade cycles

Houston’s official business overview describes energy activity alongside manufacturing, medicine, aerospace and transport infrastructure. For a small industrial supplier, the practical question is not whether the region is large: it is whether a few customers or contracts drive most collections.

  • Separate equipment quotes and installation costs from inventory and receivables funding.
  • Show exposure to a large customer or energy-related contract, and model a delay in collecting invoices.
  • For property or major machinery, ask whether the planned use fits a conventional loan, SBA 7(a) or SBA 504; eligibility depends on the actual project.

SBA, state and local resources

These are public educational resources, not Profit Theory partners or recommendations of a particular lender. Ask the administering agency about current availability and eligibility; a published program does not mean funds are available or that your business qualifies.

SBA Houston District

The Houston District serves 32 counties in southeastern Texas. Use its official resources to locate counseling and SBA funding information and confirm the district for your business county.

Texas small-business credit initiative

Texas describes capital access and loan guarantee structures through participating financial institutions. Businesses do not receive an automatic direct state loan. Ask a participating institution about current program enrollment and underwriting.

Houston financing-readiness tools

The City’s Office of Business Opportunity offers financing assessment and educational resources. A linked directory may be dated; verify current entries and terms rather than treating a listing as an endorsement.

Compare loan structures before applying

SBA 7(a) loans

Explore eligible working capital, equipment and acquisition uses. The lender evaluates repayment ability and decides whether to approve.

SBA 504 loans

Learn about eligible owner-occupied property and long-life equipment. Do not treat this as a general working-capital program.

SBA Express loans

Understand smaller SBA-backed financing and lender requirements. A streamlined process is not a guaranteed funding date.

Review SBA rates and fees and business loan requirements. Ask for written terms, fees, guarantees, collateral requirements and prepayment conditions.

Worked example: a Houston industrial supplier’s equipment purchase

A hypothetical local-style project, not local market pricing or an actual offer. The interest rate and fees below are made-up assumptions.

  • Business funding needed: $275,000; assumed fixed rate: 9.25%; term: 10 years / 120 months.
  • Upfront lender fees: $5,500, financed into the loan.
  • Estimated monthly payment: $3,591.32; estimated APR including fees: 9.72%.
  • Estimated interest plus fees over the full term: $155,958.
  • Separate payment-cost example: $40,000 monthly card volume and $1,080 monthly processing fees gives an effective rate of 2.70%.
  • Model invoice collections separately from card receipts. Large contract revenue does not eliminate the need for working capital or a cash reserve.

Effective processing rate = total processing fees ÷ card volume × 100%

Loan estimates assume equal monthly payments, a fixed rate and full-term repayment, with no balloon or additional charges. Payment costs do not imply any savings.
